Wax in Guadeloupe: handmade clothing and sourced fabrics

Discover our wax-print fabrics, with clearly identified origins, chosen for their softness and then cut and sewn entirely in our workshops.

A colourful textile that has traveled

Wax is not originally from the Antilles. Its history links Indonesian batik, European textile industry, and the tastes, uses, and meanings developed in West Africa, which made it a powerful cultural marker.

From Guadeloupe, Atelier Karaïbes integrates it into its contemporary creations with respect for this history. We love its graphic strength, colours and the possibilities it offers to every new cut.

Various origins, always identified

Our wax fabrics may come from different countries and workshops. For each selected reference, we know precisely its origin and the workshop that produced it.

This is part of how we select our fabrics: knowing where they come from helps us build coherent collections, with an appreciation of wax-print fabric that goes beyond pattern and colour.

A wax chosen to be worn

We evaluate each reference by touch and use. We look for a fabric that is soft, pleasant, and sufficiently structured to keep a nice fit without being too thick or too stiff.

The choice also depends on the intended cut, the movement of the garment, and how the patterns are placed. A wax suitable for an accessory is not necessarily the one we will choose for a dress or a child's piece.

A piece tracked from start to finish

Once selected, the wax fabric is completely cut and sewn in our workshops. Each piece is followed from start to finish by the same tailor or seamstress.

This artisanal process allows adjusting the pattern placement, cut, and finishing to the actual fabric worked on. It also gives each person a complete view of the piece they are creating.

Styles that move with you

Our models are designed to adapt to body shapes and follow movements. Some children's pieces have adjustments that grow with the child and allow wearing them for several years.

Series evolve with available fabrics: patterns change, combinations too, and each arrival opens new possibilities.

Useful answers

All questions
Do the wax patterns always remain the same from one collection to another?

The series evolve with available fabrics. To find a specific pattern, check the current pieces; do not assume a previous combination will always be offered.

Are the wax-print fabric and the garment made in the same place?

These are two separate steps. Our wax fabrics come from various origins, identified for each reference; the garments are then cut and sewn in our workshops.
