Souvenirs from Guadeloupe: how to protect them in your suitcase.

Purchases are made, departure is near, and now every gift needs a place. To bring back your memories from Guadalupe, start by separating items that wrinkle easily, those that can be compressed, and those that might rub. This method applies to handmade clothing, illustrated cards, and small objects chosen during your stay, whether in Saint-François or Les Saintes.

Sort carefully before packing your luggage

First, spread gifts on a clean, dry surface. Make three groups: papers to keep flat, soft textiles, and small objects. This sorting immediately shows which items shouldn’t be under others' weight. Keep care or installation instructions with their product.

If you bring gifts for several people, prepare a short list on your phone. You can photograph each set before wrapping it. This will prevent you from having to reopen everything upon arrival to know who the card was for or which T-shirt size you chose.

Keep postcards flat

A card simply slipped into an outer pocket can bend or crease. Group cards of the same size between two clean, rigid boards slightly larger. Place the set inside a dry pouch. Do not stick tape directly onto the card or illustration.

Place protection on a flat luggage surface without hard points above. Zippers or box corners can mark paper even in a packed suitcase. If you carry a frame, wrap it separately: a card alone is easier to protect.

Fold textiles carefully to avoid crushing prints

Make sure clothes are completely dry before packing. For printed T-shirts, avoid a sharp fold crossing the design. Fold the sides then adjust the length, keeping the illustration as flat as possible. Follow the garment's care instructions after your trip.

Place clean items in a pocket or compartment separate from shoes and damp laundry. Avoid packing them tightly against objects that might snag the fabric. To find a gift easily, slip its tag or your recipient’s marker with it—without pins or adhesive on the textile.

Avoid rubbing between small objects

Separate items that might bump or scratch each other. Use their original packaging if you kept it, or clean protective materials suited to their shape. Small pieces are easier to find inside a pouch than scattered in empty spaces of your luggage.

Avoid putting unprotected metal objects inside a mug: they can scratch its surface during the journey. Keep cards flat and separate from anything that could bend them.

Check your suitcase before departure

Before closing, ensure cards lie flat, textiles aren’t caught in closures, and no objects move freely. Keep purchases away from items that might leak. Splash protection helps during transit, but don’t store damp items in sealed packaging.

For weight, dimensions and allowed items, check your carrier’s conditions for your exact route. These depend on the ticket and transport mode. This method applies to packing souvenirs; it doesn’t replace rules for flights or crossings.

Useful answers

All questions
How to avoid folding postcards in luggage?

Place them between two clean, stiff boards slightly larger than the cards, then slide the set into a dry pouch on a flat surface. Avoid placing hard objects directly on top.

Is rolling a card to save space a good idea?

It's best to keep it flat. Rolling can deform the paper, which will be especially noticeable if you later want to frame it.

Where to find baggage and weight rules?

Review your carrier's conditions for your trip and ticket. This article's packing advice is not a transport rule.
